Abortion Group Probes White House Liaison to Christians
Is it a request for more information, or a prelude to harassment?
(FNIF) You may not have heard the name Timothy Goeglein, but NARAL Pro-Choice America has the White House public liaison aide in its cross-hairs. The group has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for disclosure of Goeglein's activities -- specifically his liaison work with Christians and conservatives.
"There is absolutely nothing wrong with being the liaison to conservative and Christian groups," said former presidential adviser Gary Bauer, who is now president of the conservative organization, American Values. "In fact the weird and bizarre thing would be if you had a conservative Christian president who did not have a liaison with those organizations and those individuals."
David Seldin, a spokesman for the organization which used to be known as the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL), admits the request for information isn't based on suspicion of anything illegal.
"I don't think that there's anything illegal taking place," Seldin said. "I think that the public has a right to know. In fact, the law says, 'The public has a right to know.'"
But Bauer wonders if it is a case of "the right to know" -- or a prelude to harassment?
"This is just another example by NARAL and the far left of trying to demonize Christians and conservatives," Bauer said, "and even going so far as to suggest that it's inappropriate for a White House to work with us."
A NARAL news release quotes Goeglein as having called abortion "a cancer within our country."
Goeglein, who has been described as "the official White House liaison to conservatives and Christian groups," in fact, works with the Office of Public Liaison, which is staffed by individuals whose jobs are to reach out to diverse groups.
